Halifax is shutting down its mobile banking app for good – but it won’t just be the app that will be gone soon.
Lloyds Banking Group, which owns the more than 170-year-old bank as well as Bank of Scotland, announced in July it’s scrapping Halifax.
The closure is being spread out over the coming months, with the Halifax app being taken off app stores on October 31.
From November 1,people banking with Halifax will have no way to digitally access their accounts.
As Lloyds, however,is at pains to stress, this doesn’t mean Halifax customers’ money will suddenly vanish.
This will leave the group with 531 branches; about 190 will be Halifax outlets.
But just because the Halifax brand is gone doesn’t mean the brick-and-mortar branches will be.
Rather, the Halifax signs will be chucked and replaced with Lloyds branding.
Lloyds,Halifax and Bank of Scotland customers can use one another’s “branches for banking, like withdrawing money or depositing cheques.
Jenny Ross, money editor at the consumer watchdog Which?,says Halifax’s closure will be a ‘loss’ for the high street.
But she warned that scammers may try to exploit Halifax users jumping over to Lloyds.
‘Halifax customers should be vigilant about any unexpected correspondence, and if contacted by a caller purporting to be from their bank, hang up and ring back using the number on the back of their bank card,’ she says.
‘The switch will be handled by Lloyds,so you will never be asked to transfer funds manually,or be required to share security details – two telltale signs of a scam.’
