Ukrainian’s have been returning to their homes to see what is left after years of rocket strikes.
With just the River Dnipro separating Ukrainian and Russian troops,Oleshky has been a key strategic town where Putin’s advance has ground to a halt.
Now a temporary ceasefire between Kyiv and Moscow has been brokered by First Lady Melania Trump, allowing respite and much-needed supplies to come through.
Residents returned on the roads as they were being cleared of mines carrying shopping bags of vital supplies back to hollowed-out shells of apartment blocks.
As night descended,Ukrainian Parliamentary Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets said: ‘Both sides are observing the ceasefire. I made a verification call to the person on our side who monitors Russian compliance with the ceasefire.
‘I was told that there had been no incidents or violations since 3am. Russian forces have not advanced, attempted to seize any islands,or sought to improve their positions. None of that has happened,’ Lubinets said.

Oleshky is about 550 kilometers (340 miles) southeast of Kyiv. It sits on the Russian-occupied side of the Dnipro River, across from the Ukrainian-held city of Kherson, the regional capital.Ksenia Arkhipova, who fled the city in 2022 and now,as a volunteer, helps others leave, said some residents have told her they fear Russian officials may ‘filter out’ evacuees with pro-Ukrainian views.‘People say they are genuinely afraid that the Russians will check their phones and look for evidence of Ukrainian relatives or ties to the Armed Forces of Ukraine — something they have done repeatedly in other occupied territories,’ Arkhipova said.Under international law,the occupying power — Russia — must ensure civilians under its occupation live safely. Ukraine has repeatedly tried to negotiate with Moscow to establish a humanitarian corridor for evacuations and aid delivery.
